More excellent stuff you should know about

What, another post already you say? Why yes, yes it is! I’m going to try and fit everything that’s happening into one post so fasten your seat belts kids, it’s going to be a bumpy night…

The Fetus

Firstly, my esteemed partner in crime, The Fetus, has been up to all kinds of shenanigans both within and across state lines! Check out her interview with the lovely Kelly from Catacomb Creative and while you’re there take a look at all the amazing design/craft/zine events going on in Melbourne-town.

Mural

Secondly, she is also responsible for the fantastic mural on the wall of Bird in the Hand‘s new zine shop as part of the Renew Newcastle project. To see it in person you can visit the shop from Thursdays to Sundays, 11am to 4pm at 100a King Street Newcastle. Susy also needs more zines to stock in the shop so if you’re a zinemaker contact her at quiet.chirps[at]gmail.com.

24 Hour Zine Thing

Thirdly, July is International Zine Month! And as part of this excellent month the 24 Hour Zine Thing is running again [thanks zine-aus google groups]! So it goes like this – sign up to the website with your zine name and zine goal and from then you have 24 hours to make a zine of any size. Once it’s done send your zine to Avocade Tree Distro in Virgina, USA [who run the project] and they’ll send you back another 24 hour zine and a badge as well as scanning your zine cover for the website. The Fetus and I have decided we’re going to participate since there’s nothing like winter to make you feel like staying inside cutting and pasting, it’d be awesome if more Australian zinemakers [new and seasoned] got involved.

AND THAT’S IT!

New zines!

Greeting and salutations!

More zine trade updates to come, but first a quick post about some new zines that we’ll have available at the MCA this Thursday as past of Creative Sydney’s LO-FI AND LOVING IT: NEW DOGS, OLD TRICKS night. Bird in the Hand zine distro will be representing with a bunch of Sydney zines including Panacea for Loneliness #2 and Newdel and Rose [which were both available at the MCA zine fair last month] as well as Ampersand after Ampersand #2, which is hot off the press this weekend.

All three were also hand delivered to Sticky on Saturday [if you’re not in the Sydney area], where I took the opportunity of testing the C3100 photocopier and let me say, AMAZING.

A little something about the new zines…

Newdel and Rose

A6, 38 pages

Our little caped adventurer Newdel is back again! This time Newdel sets out making his own special friend to spend his days with dancing, pretending and star gazing. Let’s hope the friendship never ends.
DISCLAIMER: Keep your tissue box close.

Panacea for Loneliness #2

panacea for loneliness 2

A6, 16 pages

This little followup to the original Panacea for Loneliness is more of my musings on scenes in films that I like.  This cinematic mixtape includes contemplating the similarities between Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Monte Carlo biscuits, the behind the scenes shenanigans on What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, how Blue Velvet has inspired all my dance moves and things I learned from Don’t Look Now and Bad Education.

Ampersand after Ampersand #2

A5, 24 pages

This is another personal zine inspired by my decision to quit the call centre that I’ve previously referenced in the Epitaph for my Heart series. Includes events that propelled this life-changing [for the better] decision, my take on the etiquette of resigning from crappy jobs, the aftermath of quitting and the politics of office ‘theft’.

Plus we’ll also have a new mini zine called Four Eyes For Life available for free!

So here are the details:

Where? Museum of Contemporary Art, Circular Quay

When? Thursday 11th June from 5:30pm

We’d love to see you there, it should be an excellent night!

Featured Artist on Noise.net

As it would happen, I (the fetus) have more talents than just tapping on computer keys, that’s right, I am also skilled at uploading images to the web (like this one you see below). This week I am a featured artist on Noise.net, a great worldwide website for artists of all kinds to share their work.

Feel free to check out my stuff, complete with a saucy interview with me, where I tell all my secrets, not really, at all.

That’s all for now,

Hey there campers!

In all the hustle and bustle leading up to T.I.N.A., the fetus and I forgot to mention that we had finished new zines! The fetus’ zine I’m a little nothing had it’s debut at the ST2K launch and being the amazing kid that she is, she finished two more mini zines for T.I.N.A. featuring that caped adventurer Newdel.

On the panda front, I finally finished the fourth issue of Epitaph for my Heart in time for the trip to Newcastle featuring a cover photocopied from a Sweet Dreams teenage romance novel I picked up from the Salvos. Ironically, the protagonist in the novel was name Tina. Coincidence?

Etsy and Madeit will soon be updated with these new paper goodies and we’ll also be including the Mini Zine packs above for your perusal.

Signing off,

Nerds, words and other disasters Exhibition!

Opening night was pretty great! Heaps of people came and all in all everyone had a great time. The vegan gingerbread cookies and fairy bread I made were a hit (Maddy & Natalie also made fairy bread and cupcakes yum yum!), and were gone before I could even get some. The place was decked out in really awesome works, Chris Tamm did an amazing job of it all. I feel very lucky to have been given a chance to be a part of it. Exhibition is open till the 20th of May, 10am – 5pm daily at Pine St Gallery in Chippendale.
