Coded Zine fair 2010

Back in May 2009 we received a fantastic e-mail from Blacktown Arts Centre asking us if we’d like to be part of the zine fair for 2010. We never replied, not because we a giant jerks (I’ll leave that up to your own discretion) but because we were crazy busy starting a fashion label for J.Lo (Flannelette pj’s for evening wear). Well the fashion label failed, so I guess we should now tell you about the fantastically awesome Coded Zine Fair happening at Blacktown Arts Centre in March!

Blacktown Arts Centre (BAC) has been running a zine program over the last 12 months, featuring workshops by Leigh Rigozzi, and now they are putting on an excellent Zine fair on the 13th of March.

Details:
When: 10 am – 3 pm Saturday 13 March
Where: Blacktown Arts Centre, 78 Flushcombe Rd, Blacktown NSW
Map!

Come to BAC’s Zine Fair to see the latest in creative DIY publishing. Zines are typically low-cost and limited circulation publications that feature original writing and illustration. Buy or trade original zines, softies, badges and any creative thing your heart desires at Blacktown’s first ever Zine Fair.

If you haven’t already booked your stall then visit BAC’s website or call (02) 9839 6558.

So there you go, we’ll be there as well as many other excellent local zine makers and distros.

Catchya!

Zine News! Or, Fridays are interminably long.

Here’s some stuff you may have already heard about but what can I say? It’s Friday and I’m at work and it’s pretty, pretty, pretty slow.

Firstly, Sticky Institute has launched a new mail order department to their website for Australian zines. The fetus and I have some of our zines listed as well as dozens of other excellent zinemakers so you should probably check it out. Nay, definitely check it out, especially if you aren’t in a position to visit their store in person.

Secondly, the University of Sydney is running their annual Verge Arts Festival from the 28th August to the 12th September. As is their custom there is a Night Market on Friday 4th September which the fetus and I have attended the last three years. I don’t think we’ll be manning a stall this year because it’s become a little less friendly towards zinemakers [and a little too expensive if zines are all you're hawking] but if you’re interested…

Date/Time: 6 – 10pm, Friday 4th September

Place: The University of Sydney Main Campus

Cost: $30 [plus GST], electricity provided at an additional fee.

Contact: gblackie [at] gmail [dot] com for the registration form.

Verge is also running lots of other arts, film, music and theatre events that are open to people outside of USyd as well so it’s worth checking out their website.

Thirdly, our lovely friends at Bird in the Hand and Totoro’s Tea House are launching their new stores this Saturday 15th August as part of Renew Newcastle. This project involves refurbishing 24 vacant stores in the Newcastle city area with anything from art spaces, food co-ops, sound digital media gallerys to animation studios. Bird in the Hand zine shop has been open for the last eight weeks but will be holding a late lunch from 11am-5:30pm for anyone who wants to stop by and check out some excellent zines. This is Totoro’s Tea House’s maiden week and to celebrate they’ll be holding a pre-opening party from 5:30-10pm with cupcakes and tea by donation, a live set by Miss Maddy Phelan and some groovy tunes from DJ Craig Schuftan. Click here for the location of the rest of the other spaces if you’d like to extend your walking tour!

Bird in the Hand zine shop: 100a King Street Newcastle

Totoro’s Tea House: Shop 1, 111 Hunter Street Newcastle (Cnr Morgan St)

Um, I should probably get back to ‘work’. New zine trade update coming soon.

Thanks for trading, buying and having a chat, we really appreciate the support, especially from all the people who had found us previously online via etsy or madeit and came to say hello.

Zineapalooza!

Fellow zine children,

I have good news and I have bad news. The good news is -  just when you thought there was nothing left to do on the weekends, NSW pulls out two zine fairs in one weekend, like a rabbit out of a DIY hat.

The first is this Saturday 4th April at the Pine Street Creative Arts Centre as part of Youth Week. As it says its flyer…STALLS! DIY! DANCE! ART! There’s going to be zines and crafts and street art and music and food and if last year was any indication it’s going to be pretty good.

SmART Arts 2009

The second zine fair and independent artists market is being held at the Wollongong City Gallery on Sunday 5th April courtesy of our lovely friends Maddy Phelan and Natalie von Catalie. This year there’s going to be printing and comic workshops, music, panel discussions, a vegan-friendly bakery, a stall to stall postal service and more! I am actually super-excited about this one and to prove it I will be bringing vegan T-Rex shaped gingerbread to contribute to the bakery. Icing and all.

Wollongong Gallery

Now the bad news. Since the fetus will be away on secret fetus business interstate I will be manning the stalls on both days on my own. Which means that unless you come up and say hi, trade zines or tell me I’m doing a good job I’m likely to end the weekend mumbling to myself and unintentionally going cross-eyed in the middle of conversations [as opposed to intentionally going cross-eyed].

See you there?

Newtown Art Markets

Attention crafters and artist out there making wears to sell with no where to show/sell them. Never fear, an Artist Market is here!

That’s right, this coming Saturday 14th March 2009 there will be an artist market at the Martin Luther King mural area on King St, Newtown. The art market will be different to the monthly Newtown Markets as it will be all handmade art and no second hand clothing, books etc. This is good chance to get your stuff out there and also meet other local artists. Amanda and I won’t be there for this time because we will be interstate at Adelaide Zine Fair, but we will be at the next one!

Details:
When:
10 am onwards Saturday 14th March 2009 (set up at 9 am)
Where: Martin Luther King Mural, King st, Newtown

If you are interested in doing the markets, register your interest with the following information to skullmonkey_design [at] hotmail.com or call 042471940.

1. Which suburb you’re located at?
2. What art / crafts you produce?
3. Do you produce art/crafts full time or part time?
4. What do you call yourself?
5. What items do you want to sell on the 14th?

The artist markets will continue on every second saturday of every month. So tell your friends and get yourself organised!
